Deutsche Börse: EU Commission blocks merger with LSE.

(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission on Wednesday blocked the proposed merger between Deutsche Börse and London Stock Exchange Group, in a rare prohibitive move made by the EU executive.


The Commission decided the combination would have created a "de facto monopoly" in the markets for clearing fixed income instruments, such as bonds.

"As the parties failed to offer the remedies required to address our competition concerns, the Commission has decided to prohibit the merger," justified Margrethe Vestager, the commissioner in charge of competition.

In a press release, the Commission points out that the London Stock Exchange did not agree to divest its Italian fixed income trading platform MTS.
