Berkshire: EU clears acquisition of Alleghany

(CercleFinance.com) - Under EU Merger Regulations the European Commission has cleared the acquisition of Alleghany Corporation by Berkshire Hathaway, both from the US.


Alleghany is active in asset management and provides reinsurance and property and casualty insurance.

Berkshire Hathaway provides insurance and reinsurance services, and is active in rail freight, utilities and power generation and distribution.

The Commission concluded that the proposed acquisition would not give rise to any competition concerns, given the moderate combined market position of the companies resulting from the proposed transaction and the presence of a number of strong players remaining on the market.
