GSK: positive clinical results for gonorrhea

(CercleFinance.com) - On Wednesday, GSK announced positive results from a Phase III clinical trial for its new oral antibiotic against gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted infection that is increasingly resistant to existing treatments.

The British laboratory says that the trial has showed that at a medical visit three to seven days after treatment, its gepotidacin was more effective (92.6%) than the current standard treatment, based on the combination of intramuscular ceftriaxone and oral azithromycin (91.2%).

According to GSK, there are some 82 million new cases of gonorrhea every year, including 648,056 in the US, equivalent to a 118% jump between 2009 and 2021 according to the CDC.

According to the CDC, half of all cases of gonorrhea are now resistant to at least one antibiotic treatment.
