BASF: steam cracker in Ludwigshafen commissioned

(CercleFinance.com) - On Wednesday, BASF announced the commissioning of its electric steam cracker demonstrator at the Verbund site in Ludwigshafen (Germany), a project it is carrying out with the Saudi Arabian chemical group and the industrial gas producer Linde.

The German giant points out that this inauguration comes after three years of development, engineering and construction, since the signing of their agreement dated back to March 2021.

Given that steam cracker furnaces, today powered by fossil fuels, require temperatures of up to 850 degrees, the use of renewable electricity is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 90% compared with today's furnaces.

The project received a grant of E14.8m from the German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Change as part of the 'decarbonization of industry' program.
