Equinor: electrification of platforms from the ground

(CercleFinance.com) - Equinor has announced that the Sleipner and Gudrun platforms and associated fields now operate partly on land-based energy, reducing annual emissions from the Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) by some 160,000 tonnes of CO2.

' Electrification is the most effective tool in our toolbox in our quest to achieve the national goal of halving greenhouse gas emissions from Norwegian oil and gas production by 2030', says Geir Tungesvik, Executive Vice President Projects, Drilling and Supply.

One of the two operational gas turbines on the Sleipner A platform will be phased out as part of a relevant transition of systems to the use of shore-based electricity. The other gas turbine will serve as a back-up power source during a running-in phase.

In the longer term, Sleipner will be able to operate fully on land-based energy.
