Volkswagen: sales drop for first time in five years
(CercleFinance.com) - Volkswagen said on Wednesday that its worldwide sales declined in 2020 for the first time since 2015, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, that made the year "extremely challenging.
"
Full-year sales fell by 15.2% to 9.3 million cars, the German auto giant said, albeit with December deliveries down just 3.2% year-on-year.
The carmaker said it slightly expanded its global passenger car market share in 2020 amid a declining overall market.
VW noted that its global e-offensive - with a large number of new models - was met with interest from customers, as its flagship Volkswagen brand tripled deliveries of all-electric vehicles in 2020 to approximately 231,600 units.
In Western Europe, electric vehicles rose to 10.5% of overall sales, from a mere 1.9% in 2019.
