Nokia: low-latency technology tested with Vodafone

(CercleFinance.com) - Vodafone and Nokia announced on Wednesday that they had successfully tested a new Internet technology to reduce latency, particularly in online video games.

The partners explain that they were able to reduce latency on Wi-Fi from 550 milliseconds (or 0.55 seconds) to just 12 milliseconds (0.012 seconds), even when a fiber-optic network (FTTH) is saturated.

As an indication, a latency in excess of 100 milliseconds, even if it only corresponds to the blink of an eye, can lead to 'lag' phenomena that can disrupt the smooth running of certain applications such as video games or video calls.

Vodafone and Nokia explain that the test was carried out by Nokia Bell Labs researchers at a Vodafone laboratory in Newbury (UK), using the 'L4S' architecture to optimize latency for sensitive applications.
