Bayer: to appeal ruling in Roundup cancer trial

(CercleFinance.com) - German drugs and chemicals giant Bayer said it would appeal against a US court ruling ordering it to pay hefty damages in the latest Roundup cancer litigation.

A federal court in San Francisco has concluded that Monsanto's herbicide caused Edwin Hardeman's cancer, awarding the plaintiff over 80 million dollars in damages.

According to analysts covering the Bayer stock, this ruling came as "no big surprise".

"Given the jury's finding in phase 1 of the Hardeman trial last week, the overall ruling is not a surprise," UBS noted. "But damages are significantly lower," the broker added.

The stock seemed to be resisting, with Bayer down just 0.8% this morning in Frankfurt.

Another Roundup cancer trial is set to start today in Oakland, California. In all, Monsanto's weed killer is currently subject to over 11,000 suits in the United States alone.
