Alphabet: Google plans to lay off 12,000 staff

(CercleFinance.com) - Not quite as easy as ABC.
.. on Friday Alphabet announced that it would lay off about 12,000 of its workforce at its main subsidiary, Google, ahead of the forthcoming economic downturn.

In a message sent to the technology group's employees, CEO Sundar Pichai said he was "deeply sorry" about the prospect of many of the company's talented employees leaving, but took full responsibility for the situation.

Over the past two years, we have experienced periods of spectacular growth, he said, adding that to meet and fuel this growth, the company hired for an economic reality that was very different from the one we are experiencing today, he said.

However, he emphasises that the significant investments made in artificial intelligence should enable him to limit the effects of the crisis.

As of 30 September, Alphabet employed nearly 190,000 people, with potential redundancies therefore representing about 6% of this total.
