Rolls-Royce: extends its range with more durable mtu engines
(CercleFinance.com) - Rolls-Royce announces that its mtu Series 1163 and 8000 engines, with power ratings from 4800 to 10,000 kW, are now available in 16V and 20V cylinder variants, and equipped with an SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction, a technology for reducing nitrogen oxide emissions) to comply with the IMO III emissions standard.
This system enables ships to enter Emission Control Areas (ECAs) such as the Baltic and the North Sea. The engines are also approved for sustainable fuels such as HVO.
The new exhaust gas treatment reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 75% compared with IMO II standards, with installation flexibility and shock resistance for military applications.
The SCR system can be mounted horizontally or vertically, and is designed to withstand extreme conditions. The engines can replace conventional diesel without modification, the British engine manufacturer says.
