Air Liquide: new PPAs with Sasol in South Africa

(CercleFinance.com) - Air Liquide announced on Tuesday that it has signed new long-term contracts with South Africa's Sasol for 100 MW of renewable electricity capacity at the Secunda site.

The partnership has been concluded with wind and solar energy provider Mainstream Renewable Power, which has been commissioned to build a solar farm due to be operational in 2025.

This is the third series of 'PPAs' signed by Air Liquide and Sasol, following those already announced earlier this year with Enel Green Power and with TotalEnergies and its partner Mulilo.

These agreements should contribute to Air Liquide's objective of reducing CO2 emissions linked to oxygen production by 30% to 40% by 2031 in Secunda, where the Group operates the world's largest oxygen production site.

For the record, Air Liquide bought Sasol's 16 oxygen production units in Secunda, which it will now operate from June 2021.

Including another air separation unit (ASU) that the Group already operated for Sasol, Air Liquide operates a total of 17 ASUs in Secunda, for a total capacity of 47,000 tonnes of oxygen per day.
