ABB: to provide hybrid-electric propulsion for US ferries

(CercleFinance.com) - ABB has been selected to supply hybrid-electric propulsion and energy storage systems for Washington State ferries, the Swiss engineering group said on Thursday.


The company has been chosen by American shipbuilding company Vigor for the newest additions for its ferry system, the largest in the UD, aiming at zero-emission operations.

By 2040, the Washington Ferry System plans to replace 13 existing diesel ferries with hybrid-electric newbuilds and to convert six other ferries to plug-in hybrid, with recharging capacity installed at many ferry terminals.

The new ferries will have the capacity to carry 144 cars and 1,500 passengers each.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
