CAC40: closes at 8200 pts, Thales soars

(CercleFinance.com) - The Paris Bourse closed the session with a gain of 1.
09%, at 8199 points, driven by a surge in the shares of arms and military technology companies. Thalès gained 16%, ahead of Airbus (+5.2%), Dassault Systèmes (+3.2%) and Safran (+3.1%).

At a time when U.S. aid to Kiev is neither obvious nor permanent, European powers reaffirmed their support for Ukraine over the weekend, and Western chancelleries seem determined to take over from the U.S. by sharply increasing their military spending.

Testifying to this trend, "shares in the six largest US defense companies have fallen by 4% since Donald Trump returned to the White House, due to the expected reduction in the Pentagon's budget, while European defense giant Rheinmetalla has jumped by 40%", noted Christopher Dembik this morning, Investment Strategy Advisor at Pictet

Across the Atlantic, the Dow Jones and S&P500 are unchanged, while the Nasdaq is down -0.3%.

On the statistics front, growth accelerated in the US manufacturing sector in February, according to the final results of S&P Global's PMI survey of purchasing managers.
The index climbed to 52.7 last month, its highest level since June 2022, after 51.2 in January.

This is the second month in a row that the index has been above the 50-point threshold, which indicates growth in activity.

Similarly, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reports that US manufacturing activity rose in February for the second month in a row, following 26 consecutive months of contraction.

After 50.9 in January, the activity index rose to 50.3 in February. Although it dipped slightly between January and February, the index has the merit of remaining above 50, the threshold separating growth in activity (>50) from contraction in activity (index < 50).

On the Old Continent, inflation in the eurozone slowed year-on-year in February, according to an initial estimate released by Eurostat on Monday.

The consumer price index rose at an annualized rate of 2.4% last month, compared with 2.5% in January, a less marked deceleration than the consensus forecast of 2.3%.

It should be noted that the Eurozone manufacturing PMI index reached a two-year high in February, as contractions in production and new orders slowed, according to a survey released on Monday by German bank HCOB.

Europe's economic agenda looks set to be a busy one over the next few days, with the European Central Bank (ECB) scheduled to hold its monetary policy meeting on Thursday.

A quarter-point easing is widely priced in, and the market is awaiting the comments of ECB President Christine Lagarde at her traditional press conference.

Knowing that this would be the ECB's sixth rate cut in a row, the room for further reductions is indeed starting to narrow, according to analysts.

Investors will also be keeping an eye on developments in trade relations, as Donald Trump announced the introduction of 10% additional tariffs on Chinese products as of tomorrow.

On the other hand, the "clash" that broke out on Friday evening in the Oval Office of the White House between the US President and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky seems to have been put into perspective by the markets.

Investors seem visibly focused on the hopes raised by the prospect of a possible Franco-British peace plan drawn up in London, where several European leaders met yesterday.

In other French company news, Thales announced on Monday the signature of a memorandum of understanding with Earth, a subsidiary of the Emirati group Edge, to which the French electronics manufacturer will supply IFF identification systems.

Alstom announced the signature of a contract with CLIP Intermodal for the delivery of third-generation Traxx multisystem locomotives. The order will include five locomotives, which will be approved for operation in Poland, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
