Microsoft: investigation into cloud services launched by UK'
(CercleFinance.com) - Following a referral from Ofcom, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announces the launch of an investigation into the provision of public cloud infrastructure services in the UK, naming Microsoft in particular.
This independent inquiry, which is due to be completed by April 2025, aims to determine whether there are any competition issues and, if so, what interventions can improve the provision of these services for UK customers.
In its study, Ofcom identified several features in the cloud service offering that make it more difficult for customers to switch and use multiple cloud providers, such as exit fees or technical barriers.
Ofcom's report also highlights the concerns it has heard about the software licensing practices of some cloud providers, in particular Microsoft, the CMA adds.
