Merck: FDA approves liver cancer drug

(CercleFinance.com) - Japan's Eisai and Merck's drug Lenvima has been granted an approval by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of the most common type of liver cancer.

The approval was based on results from a phase 3 study in which Lenvima demonstrated a proven effect on overall survival and meaningful improvements in progression-free survival when compared with Bayer's sorafenib in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma, the drugmakers said.

Menvima had already been approved in the US for thyroid cancer and for patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.
