GE Healthcare: collaborating with Novo Nordisk
(CercleFinance.com) - GE HealthCare announced on Thursday evening that it had signed a collaboration agreement with Danish laboratory Novo Nordisk to develop an ultrasound treatment for diabetes.
The Chicago-based group says that it has discovered a technology called "peripheral focused ultrasound stimulation" (PFUS) that can regulate the body's metabolic function and treat chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and obesity.
This non-invasive approach - which uses ultrasound to activate the nervous system to stimulate a therapeutic response - has shown encouraging results in preclinical trials, it says.
GE HealthCare adds that preliminary clinical research suggests that it can have an impact on glucose metabolism in diabetics through personalized ultrasound stimulation of nerve pathways.
