Meta: EU requests measures against misinformation
(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission today announced that it has officially sent Meta a request for information on the various measures taken to protect the integrity of elections, and mitigate the risks associated with the dissemination of illegal content, misinformation and any negative effects on the Web.
The Commission also refers to the terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas throughout Israel, in particular as regards the dissemination and amplification of illegal content and disinformation.
Meta must provide the Commission with the requested information by 25 October for issues relating to the response to the crisis in the Middle East, and by 8 November for the protection of election integrity.
Based on the assessment of Meta's responses, the Commission will evaluate the next steps. The Commission may impose fines for incorrect, incomplete or misleading information in response to a request for information. Failure to respond on time may also result in the imposition of penalty payments.
