Ericsson: world's first 5G wireless base station
(CercleFinance.com) - Ericsson today announced that it has teamed up with the US group PowerLight Technologies to create the first secure, fully wireless 5G base station.
The proof of concept (PoC) demonstration stage was recently taken in Seattle using laser-based technology that converts electricity into high-intensity light which is then captured and turned into electricity at the base station.
Both partners see this milestone as a major step towards the transfer of kilowatts of energy over long distances.
Transferring energy safely over long distances without having to be connected to the power grid eliminates one of the big hurdles faced when building new cell sites. The time savings and flexibility will make it an attractive solution for customers, Ericsson said.
