STMicroelectronics: image sensors for vehicles
(CercleFinance.com) - Late on Thursday STMicroelectronics unveiled a new shutter image sensor for use in driver condition monitoring systems.
The components are designed to monitor a driver's head movements to recognise possible signs of drowsiness or distraction, which then triggers warnings to keep occupants safe.
Transport authorities estimate that approximately 95% of traffic accidents are the result of human error, many of which could be prevented by the use of driver monitoring systems.
After 19,000 road accidents in Europe in 2020, recent legislation will make the installation of such monitoring systems mandatory in all new vehicles starting as from 2024.
The group plans to begin production of the VB56G4A in 2023, for integration into vehicles in 2024.
