SES: to launch the EAGLE-1 satellite system
(CercleFinance.com) - SES, ESA and the European Commission are joining forces to provide a satellite-based quantum cryptography system for European cybersecurity.
A consortium of 20 European companies, led by SES, will design, develop, launch and operate the EAGLE-1 satellite system for the future pan-European cyber security system.
SES will build the first space-based QKD system based on European technology, developing and operating a dedicated satellite in low earth orbit (LEO) and building a state-of-the-art QKD operations centre in Luxembourg.
The project is co-financed by ESA, with contributions from Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the European Commission through the Horizon Europe program.
With the EAGLE-1 satellite set to be launched in 2024, i.e. not straightaway, the news seems to be overlooked by the market, with the SES share down 1.5% as noon approaches.
