AstraZeneca: seeks to step up vaccine production
(CercleFinance.com) - While AstraZeneca announces that millions of Covid vaccines began shipping on 5 February, the company says that it is "exploring options" with IDT Biologika to accelerate vaccine production in the second quarter of 2021 to meet immediate needs.
In particular, AstraZeneca says a joint investment to create significant additional drug substance capacity for the future. While details have yet to be finalised, both partners plan to build up to five 2000L bioreactors that are capable of producing tens of millions of doses of the vaccine per month, at IDT Biologika's Dessau, Germany, site.
The new equipment could then be operational by the end of 2022, AstraZeneca says. This investment could also enable the manufacture of other vaccines sharing a similar manufacturing process, which would significantly expand domestic vaccine production capacity in Europe.
