AstraZeneca: first contract with European Commission

(CercleFinance.com) - The European Commission announced on Thursday the formal signing of a first contract with AstraZeneca for the purchase of its coronavirus vaccine project for all EU states.

Brussels says that the agreement will enable all Member States to buy 300 million doses of the vaccine, with an option for an additional 100 million doses.

For the record, the investigational AstraZeneca vaccine has already begun large-scale Phase II/III clinical trials with results that are considered promising in Phase I/II for its safety and immunogenicity.

In a statement, the Commission points out that it is also continuing discussions with other vaccine manufacturers, including Sanofi and GSK, Johnson & Johnson, CureVac and Moderna, with a view to concluding similar agreements.

The European executive says it plans to donate vaccine doses to low- and middle-income countries or to redistribute them to other European countries.
