Thales: agreement on quantum communication
(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Alenia Space - a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%) - today announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with SpeQtral, a specialist in quantum satellite communication technologies, to research, develop and demonstrate quantum communications from space to Earth.
It says that the use of satellites is currently considered the best option for long-distance quantum communications.
The agreement signed between both partners provides for joint experiments between the SpeQtral-1 quantum satellite currently under development and an ultra-modern quantum ground station currently being developed by Thales Alenia Space by 2025. This collaboration, which should also involve Thales Alenia Space, will be the first of its kind in Europe.
The group said that it will provide both countries with an excellent basis for joint work and experimentation, while enabling them to mutually benefit from each other's technological expertise.
