Thales: MTG-L1 satellite soon in Kourou
(CercleFinance.com) - Thales Alenia Space, prime contractor for the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites, is currently carrying out the final integration phase of the MTG-I1 satellite.
The satellite will soon leave for the Kourou Space Centre in French Guiana, where it is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2022 aboard an Ariane 5 rocket.
MTG-I1 is the first imaging satellite in the Meteosat Third Generation program, dedicated to improving weather forecasts in Europe and Africa. The MTG satellites, manufactured by Thales Alenia Space, will operate in geostationary orbit, 36,000 km from Earth, and have a lifetime of 8.5 years.
The program consists of six satellites: four imaging satellites (MTG-I) and two atmospheric sounders (MTG-S) capable of providing 3D mapping of the atmosphere.
