Kone: wins US elevator, escalator deal
(CercleFinance.com) - Finnish lift maker Kone said on Wednesday that it has won an order to provide escalators and elevators from the Washington subway system in the US.
The company said that the seven-year contract includes modernization of 130 escalators in 32 so-called "Metrorail" stations of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
The system is operated by an interstate compact that is formed by the District of Columbia, the state of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Construction will begin in May, with completion expected in 2027.
When the project is complete, over half of the 618 escalators in the subway system will be Kone equipment, the company said in a statement, without giving the financial details of the deal.
