Santander: UBS' Andrea Orcel appointed group CEO
(CercleFinance.com) - Santander named UBS' Andrea Orcel as its next group chief executive officer on Tuesday as the Spanish banking giant is stepping up its efforts in digitalisation and trying to build an integrated, open financial services platform.
Following an intensive selection process carried out with external advisers, its board of directors has decided to appoint Orcel, who is currently member of UBS group's executive committee.
He has worked closely with Santander for almost two decades, the bank said.
He is expected to take office in early 2019.
Andrea Orcel will replace José Antonio Álvarez, who will succeed Rodrigo Echenique as vice-chairman of the group and chairman of Santander Spain.
Ana Botin will remain the executive chairman of Banco Santander.
