Bayer: reassures on safety of birth control system
(CercleFinance.com) - One week after announcing it had made the decision to discontinue marketing of its Essure birth control product in the United States, Bayer on Friday reaffirmed the safety profile of the system.
In a statement, Bayer said efficacy and safety of Essure has been demonstrated in 40 published studies involving more than 200,000 women.
The group also warned against public promotion of Essure removal, that could lead women to pursue unwarranted surgery, and potentially cause new health problems.
"There is no reliable scientific evidence to suggest that any new safety concerns exist with Essure", Bayer said.
On July 20, the company made the decision to voluntarily discontinue sales and distribution of Essure in the United States, but the move will be effective after December 31, 2018.
The FDA said Essure can create a blockage that prevents the passage of an egg from the ovary, and has been associated with numerous adverse events.
