BMW: to form powerful joint venture in charging stations.
(CercleFinance.com) - BMW said on Friday it would form a joint venture with rivals Daimler, Ford and Volkswagen to develop an electric vehicle charging network for long-distance travel across Europe.
Based in Munich, the "Ionity" joint venture aims at launching approximately 400 high-power charging (HPC) stations by 2020.
As from 2017, a total of 20 stations will be opened to the public, located on major roads in Germany, Norway and Austria, at intervals of 120 km.
Through 2018, the network will be expanded to over 100 stations.
BMW, Daimler, Ford Motor and the Volkswagen Group will have equal shares in the joint venture, which will also include VW's luxury units Audi and Porsche.
