Johnson & Johnson: to appeal opioid judgment in Oklahoma

(CercleFinance.com) - US healthcare giant Johnson & Johnson said on Monday that it will appeal against a 572 million dollar civil judgment handed to its biopharmaceutical unit Janssen by an Oklahoma court, saying that the judgment was "flawed".

According to J&J, the State of Oklahoma - which is suing opioid manufacturers - has failed to present evidence that Janssen's products or actions have caused public nuisance in Oklahoma.

"Janssen did not cause the opioid crisis in Oklahoma, and neither the facts nor the law support this outcome," the company said.

Janssen developed two types of prescription opioid medicines - a patch and a crush-resistant tablet - designed to help patients suffering from severe pain.

However, its drugs have accounted for less than 1% of total opioid prescriptions in Oklahoma, J&J said.
