Amazon: buys first-ever Boeing aircraft to speed deliveries

(CercleFinance.com) - Amazon has made its first-ever purchase of eleven Boeing aircraft, as part of the e-commerce giant's efforts to ship items across longer distances in shorter timeframes, the company said on Tuesday.

The deal includes seven 767-300 jets from Delta, a major US airline that is currently facing a collapse in passenger traffic, and four aircraft from the Canadian air carrier WestJet, the Seattle-based tech company said.

The four planes purchased from WestJet are currently undergoing passenger-to-cargo conversions and will join Amazon Air's network in 2021, while the seven jets from Delta will enter Amazon's air cargo network in 2022.

Amazon said the fleet additions will ensure added capacity for years to come.

The company said it plans to continue to rely on third-party carriers to operate these new aircraft.
