Alphabet: end of the road for Google+ social network
(CercleFinance.com) - Google, subsidiary of Alphabet Group, last night announced that its Google+ social network for individuals will be shut down after a security breach was discovered in the service code that remained online for three years and which was revealed by the Wall Street Journal earlier on Monday.
Google+ was launched in 2011 to compete with Facebook, without ever really matching it: although professionals have often seen an opportunity to improve the referencing of their companies, individuals have gradually deserted it. As such, they will have 10 months to recover their data hosted on the social network, before it is deleted permanently.
According Google's press release, 500,000 accounts were at risk for 15 days due to the security breach identified by the Wall Street Journal (which Google discovered and corrected in March). In addition, 438 applications using Google+'s API were able to access this data over the same time period. However, Google says that to date it has no proof that any developer has used the flaw to access data.
