SAS: December traffic down 80% year-on-year

(CercleFinance.com) - SAS, Scandinavia's biggest airline, said that its passenger traffic fell 80% year-on-year in December.

The carrier, which is jointly owned by Sweden, Norway and Denmark, said that almost 400,000 passengers flew with the airline last month, an increase of 18% compared to last month.

As SAS reduced its capacity by 6% compared to November, which corresponds to a reduction of 74% compared to last year, its passenger load factor - a measure of how well it fills its seats - came in at 33%, up eight percentage points from the previous month, although down 38 points compared to last year.

"The overall demand continues to be heavily impacted by continued restrictions, with holiday travel significantly below normal levels in December," SAS said.

While demand is expected to remain subdued throughout the winter season, SAS said it is encouraged by the recent vaccine developments and COVID-19 vaccination programs that have begun.

The share is currently down almost 2%.
