Norsk Hydro: to build car battery recycling plant in Norway

(CercleFinance.com) - Norwegian aluminium producer Norsk Hydro and Swedish battery startup Northvolt said that they will build a pilot plant that will recycle battery materials and aluminum from electric vehicles.


The battery recycling plant - the first of its kind in Norway - is expected to start production in 2021. It will be able to process over 8,000 tonnes of batteries per year, the companies said.

A typical EV (electric vehicle) battery pack can contain over 25% aluminium, totaling about 70-100 kg aluminium per pack.

The total investment is estimated at around 100 million Norwegian kronor (about 10 million euros).

Also note that Egil Hogna, the executive vice president of the extruded solutions unit at Hydro, has decided to leave the company to take over as CEO for Norconsult, a Norwegian consultancy firm.
