Gemalto: launches biometric card for contactless payments

(CercleFinance.com) - The world leader in digital security, Gemalto, has announced that it has been selected by Bank of Cyprus to offer the world's first biometric dual interface EMV payment card, for both contact and contactless payments.


"Using fingerprint recognition instead of a PIN code to authenticate the cardholder, the card is compatible with existing payment terminals already installed in the country," the group said.

When customers place their fingerprint on the sensor, a comparison is made between the scanned fingerprint and the biometric data stored in the card. The biometric sensor of the card is powered by the payment terminal.
