TomTom: reaches 'milestone' in digital navigation mapping

5 billion map updates in July, which the Dutch firm considers as a "milestone" in its efforts to bring real-time navigation maps.

On average, TomTom maps are updated over 570 times a second, enabling more accurate routing for 1.2 million kilometres of roads, the company said in a statement.

TomTom's maps are delivered to automakers, suppliers, technology companies and developers on a weekly basis.

The group said this level of scalability enables users to deal with high definition (HD) mapping for autonomous vehicles.
