easyJet: considers closing three UK bases

(CercleFinance.com) - easyJet said that it is considering the closure of three of its bases in the UK - London Stansted, London Southend and Newcastle - as part of its cost-cutting efforts.

The announcement was made yesterday as the low-cost carrier began consultation with its UK employee representatives to reduce staff numbers by up to 30%, as well as optimise its network as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

easyJet said it plans to remain committed to 11 UK bases, where it currently operates 163 aircraft and travels over 546 routes.

The carrier said the London Stansted, London Southend and Newcastle airports would still remain part of its route network.

But easyJet said it will continue to review its network and bases to ensure its costs are optimised in the current context.

The company has already said several times that the market demand levels seen in 2019 are unlikely to be reached again before 2023.
