Shell: major waste-to-energy project in Singapore

(CercleFinance.com) - Shell announced Tuesday that it will build a pyrolysis oil recovery unit in Singapore, a technology that transforms plastic waste into chemical compounds of circular origin.

The unit, which is scheduled to come on stream by 2023, will be installed at its Pulau Bukom refinery. With an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes, equivalent to 7.8 billion plastic bags processed: it will be the largest in Asia.

The site will recycle hard-to-treat plastics that were destined for landfill into a liquid that can be used as a chemical feedstock, for example in the manufacture of tyres or mattresses.

In a statement, Shell cites growing demand from its customers in Asia, with an initial supply contract already signed with the chemical and pharmaceutical group Asahi Kasei.
