BT: unveils new 5G ambitions
(CercleFinance.com) - BT today unveiled plans to deliver high-performance 5G solutions across the UK and merge its core mobile, Wi-Fi and fiber infrastructure to unlock the full potential of the UK's first fully converged network.
"Openreach (a BT division) was first to fiber, EE (BT's ISP) was first to 5G and together BT will be first to a fully converged future", Philip Jansen, BT Group's CEO said.
To expand its mobile coverage, BT's mobile network, EE, plans to extend 4G connectivity deeper into rural areas. In addition, EE's 5G network will be expanded to cover half of the UK population by early 2023, four years ahead of the UK government's ambition.
Finally, BT will also continue to secure its networks and is announcing spending of over 60 million pounds a year on research into the security of advanced technologies such as AI and quantum key distribution, with innovations such as the development of hollow core fiber.
