bp: Bighorn Solar project commissioned in Colorado

(CercleFinance.com) - On Wednesday Lightsource bp, the solar photovoltaic subsidiary of bp, announced the commissioning of its Bighorn Solar project, located in Colorado.


The 750,000-panel solar power plant will provide green electricity to the steel mill of Russian steelmaker Evraz in Pueblo.

Although it is already generating energy, the Bighorn Solar project will not be fully operational until November, Lightsource bp said.

When it comes online, the Evraz facility - which converts recycled scrap metal into purer steel, especially for the rail industry - will become the first steel mill in North America to primarily use solar power.

The project is also expected to help Colorado reach its goal of 100% renewable energy by 2040.
