Rio Tinto: record sales of exceptional diamonds
(CercleFinance.com) - Diamonds are forever for Rio Tinto today as announced that its entire 2021 collection, entitled "Once in a Blue Moon Tender", has been purchased by Kunming Diamonds, a Hong Kong-based coloured diamond specialist, in a "record" sale.
The collection consisted of 41 lots of blue and violet diamonds from the Argyle mine in Western Australia.
Closed in November 2020, the Argyle mine sporadically produced small diamonds in a range of shades from blue to violet. It is extremely unlikely that there will ever be another supply of gems in this colour spectrum from a single mine, Rio Tinto said.
The mining group also announced the sale of 70 pink and red diamonds from its 2021 collection, entitled The Journey Beyond, comprising the pinnacle of Argyle's production in its final year of operation.
The diamonds were hotly contested by buyers from around the world and sold for record prices, the mining group says, which did not say much about them, saying only that 19 bidders from nine countries had been selected.
Irrespective, the share is currently down about 1.5% in mid-afternoon trading on Thursday.
