Rio Tinto: CO2 capture and storage with Carbfix
(CercleFinance.com) - Rio Tinto today announces a strategic partnership with Carbfix for a CO2 capture and storage project underground around Rio Tinto's ISAL aluminium smelter in Iceland.
Under the terms of the MoU, Carbfix will use Rio Tinto's land surrounding the ISAL smelter to drill injection wells and establish the Coda terminal, a carbon ore storage facility.
The liquefied CO2 is then injected into solid carbonate mineral geological formations, accelerating natural processes.
Importantly, the innovative technology developed by Carbfix paves the way for a new decarbonisation of aluminium production in our ISAL smelter, Rio Tinto said.
Carbfix plans to drill the first injection wells for the Coda terminal in 2022, with CO2 deliveries from 2025.
