Iliad: Free could stop showing Altice channels from Friday

(CercleFinance.com) - According to information published on Wednesday in Le Figaro, Free, the main subsidiary of the Iliad group, could stop broadcasting channels of the group Altice as from Friday evening.

The reason for this is that Altice, the parent company of the operator SFR, has decided to ask for remuneration from other operators for the right to broadcast BFM TV, RMC Découverte and RMC Story. Decision upheld by the District Court, which has ordered Free to pay a penalty of 100,000 euros per day if it continues to broadcast the channels in question after 27 August. Le Figaro therefore says that Altice seems decided to take the lead.

Note that if no agreement were to be reached between both groups, Patrick Drahi's Altice could lose a significant share of its audience: Free was, at the end of 2018, and according to the Journal du Net, the second broadband and very high speed operator in France, behind Orange and even ahead of... SFR itself. That is unless the conflict ends up benefiting the operator SFR, if Free clients decide to change their ISP due to losing BFM TV, RMC Découverte and RMC Story. To be watched...
