Nokia: picked by NASA for cellular network on the Moon

(CercleFinance.com) - NASA has chosen Nokia to build the first ever cellular network on the Moon to lead the way towards sustainable human presence on the lunar surface, the Finnish telecom gear maker said on Monday.


Nokia said its technologies will be used to deploy an ultra-compact, low-power, space-hardened LTE network - the forerunner of 5G - on the satellite in late 2022.

The network will provide communication for data transmission applications, including command and control functions, remote control of lunar rovers, and streaming of high definition video, it added.

Nokia said it is partnering with Houston-based start-up Intuitive Machines for this mission to integrate the network into their lunar lander and deliver it to the moon's surface.
