E.ON: SmartQuart energy laboratory kicking off

ON said on Wednesday that SmartQuart, a project intended to make fossil fuels superfluous in residential areas, is now entering its implementation phase.

The project aims to develop new products and solutions for the planning, construction and operation of energy-optimized neighborhoods by the end of 2024.

The project - which has been developed by a consortium of ten partners under the leadership of E.ON - is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy.

A total exceeding 60 million euros will be invested.

The project will be located in the district of Bedburg, near Koln, which is characterised by a residential development area and a typical small-town building density.

Renewable energy currently represent around 40% of the electricity sector in Germany.
