Bayer: invests in US dermatology company Azitra

(CercleFinance.com) - Bayer is investing 8 million dollars in a US biotech firm in a move that will use microbiome to treat skin diseases.

The German drugmaker on Thursday agreed to lead a 17 million-dollar financing in Azitra, a company that was founded in 2014 by scientists from Yale University to treat skin rashes and atopic dermatitis.

Recent scientific publications suggest that microorganisms such as bacteria can contribute to the protection of the skin from hostile invasions and support the recovery from skin diseases such as acne and rosacea, Bayer said.

Cure through microbiome health is one of Bayer's 10 fields on which the company has chosen to focus its investments.

In January, Bayer and Azitra said that they would collaborate to leverage Azitra's portfolio of staphylococcus epidermidis strains to identify potential candidates for the treatment of skin diseases.
