Bayer: commission clears Monasanto takeover

(CercleFinance.com) - Acting as the European competition regulator, after a thorough review, the Commission has approved the takeover of the US agrochemist Monsanto by the German group Bayer, subject to several significant disposals.


Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, in charge of competition policy, said: "We have approved Bayer's plans to take over Monsanto because the parties' remedies, worth well over E6 billion, meet our competition concerns in full. (...) we have made sure that the number of global players actively competing in these markets stays the same.”

The Brussels authority has therefore decided that commitments submitted proposed by Bayer, i.e. sales that mainly consisted of the resale of seed activities to BASF, "address these competition concerns in full".
