Volkswagen: to spend 3.5 billion euros on digital

(CercleFinance.com) - The Volkswagen brand is planning to spend some 3.
5 billion euros through to 2025 as part of its digitalisation offensive, the German carmaker said on Thursday.

Volkswagen said it intends to play a "leading role in the new automobile industry," and aims at generating billions of euros in sales from its digital offerings and services, the company said.

The group said that 2020 would be a turning point for the Volkswagen brand, when Volkswagen begins connecting its entire fleet.

Volkswagen - which sees itself "in transition" - said that it is speeding up the development of its ecosystem, developing its own software infrastructure.

The brand today launched an all-electric car sharing offering under its "We Share" sub-brand: a first fleet of 1,500 e-Golf will be rolled out in Berlin, beginning in the second quarter of 2019, with an additional 500 vehicles following thereafter.
