Merck KGaA: EU approves acquisition of consumer unit by P&G

(CercleFinance.com) - On Tuesday the European Commission has approved the acquisition of the consumer health business of Germany's Merck KGaA by US giant Procter & Gamble.

The EU executive arm concluded that the proposed transaction would raise no competition concerns because the companies' activities are generally complementary, it said.

"The transaction gives rise to a limited number of horizontal overlaps for which the Commission found, following its market investigation, that sufficient competition will remain after the transaction," the Commission added.

The deal has been examined under the normal merger review procedure.

Merck has reached an agreement to sell its consumer health business to Procter & Gamble in April for approximately 3.4 billion euros in cash. The division includes brands such as the Seven Seas nutrition line and nasal decongestant Nasivin.
