ABB: 100th order for Azipod propulsion
(CercleFinance.com) - ABB announces that its Azipod propulsion technology, which was launched in 1990, has secured its 100th ship order, winning a contract to power the world's first hybrid electric icebreaker.
The Swiss engineering group specifies that two Azipods will equip a cruise ship to deliver to the French company Ponant in 2021, a ship that will take passengers to the Arctic and Antarctic.
Marcus Högblom, head of the Ice & Dry Cargo Passenger segment at ABB Marine & Ports, estimates that energy savings equivalent to 700,000 tons of fuel have been made in the cruise sector thanks to the selection of Azipod.
