Holcim: partnership for more sustainable emergency shelters

(CercleFinance.com) - Swiss cement company Holcim today announced that it will work with the Norman Foster Foundation to reinvent emergency shelters and transform them into more sustainable housing.


The building materials group says it plans to work with the non-profit organisation to design shelters made from innovative low-carbon materials.

This aims to develop a process to deploy some 1,000 shelters and a medical centre in a single day.

Currently, more than 80 million people around the world have been forced to leave their homes, Holcim said. Emergency shelters should not only provide a roof over their heads, but also give them the dignity and security of a home, it added.

In Kenya, Holcim recently succeeded in designing an affordable house using 3D printing technology.
